Minister Says Ministry of Defence Investigating Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Staff Told to Avoid Secret Talk in Vehicles.

A defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been advised to refrain from discussing secret information in all vehicles.

Security Guidance for Defence Personnel

In a recently aired interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about secret material while travelling in China-made cars.

He stated that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any vehicle, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Wider Security Context

This revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

The broader security environment highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in every aspects of government operations, from vehicle usage to communication habits.
