Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the option to question specific calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
